‘The Iron Lady’s’ Meryl Streep Becomes Vogue’s Oldest Cover Girl at Age 62

Meryl Streep has become the oldest person ever to grace the cover of U.S. Vogue with the magazine’s January issue.

The actress, who also marks her first time as the magazine’s cover girl with the issue, made a joke to the staffers about her age.

“I was joking with the ladies earlier,” Streep said, as reported by ABC News. “And I told them I was probably the oldest person ever to be on the cover of Vogue.”

It’s apparently true. According to the Huffington Post, she has taken the honor from 2004 cover girl, then-59-year-old Priscilla Presley, who appeared with her daughter and granddaughter.

Streep also told the magazine that she thought her career was over 20 years ago, when she turned 40.

At the time, she was offered three different roles to play a witch and took that as a message that women in her age group were perceived as “grotesque on some level.”

“It’s over,” she told her husband at the time.

But she’s continued to have a hugely successful career, including playing the fictional editor of a Vogue-like magazine in the box office hit The Devil Wears Prada. She also holds the record for most Oscar nominations for any actor, having been nominated a total of 16 times.

Next up, she plays former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady, which opens Jan. 13. The role has again been earning her Oscar buzz.
