Meryl Streep stepped out in an off-the-shoulder Elie Saab look at the 2017 Oscars on Sunday.
The actress, styled by Micaela Erlanger, paired her look with a slim ankle trouser also by the brand. Her decision to wear Elie Saab comes on the heels of WWD‘s report that Streep turned down a custom couture Chanel creation after the fashion house refused to pay her to wear it.
However, a representative for the actress told THR that the statement is false, and that it is against her personal ethics to be paid to wear a gown on the red carpet.

In a statement to THR, Chanel added: “Chanel engaged in conversations with Ms. Streep’s stylist to design a dress for her to wear to the Academy Awards, with the full understanding that she was considering options from other design houses. When informed by the stylist that Ms. Streep had chosen a dress by another designer there was no mention of the reason. Chanel wishes to express our continued and deep respect for Ms. Streep.”
Streep is nominated for best actress for her work in Florence Foster Jenkins, going up against fellow nominees Emma Stone (La La Land), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving) and Natalie Portman (Jackie).
The 89th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, airs live on ABC at 5:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. ET.
