The Met Gala isn’t just a big day for fashion designers — it’s a big day for beauty experts, too. Here, we asked celebrity makeup artists to dish on the products they provided for their clients so they could stay fresh — and flawless — on Monday night.
The Masters of Sex actress’ go-to makeup artist, Sabrina Bedrani filled her Edie Parker clutch with Dior Diorskin Nude Compact in Medium Beige 30 ($49), Tatcha blotting papers ($12) and the two lip products she’d used on Caplan—Dior Rouge de Fete lip liner ($30) and Rouge Dior Couture Colour Voluptuous Care Lipstick in Rouge Zinnia 743 ($35). “A bright lipstick can be high maintenance so it was important for her to be able to touch it up throughout the night,” Bedrani told Pret-a-Reporter. And the compact and blotting papers would help “keep shine down,” with the added bonus of being “the perfect size for any clutch.”
Eschewing her signature deep purple lip, Lorde’s makeup artist, Amber Dreadon, opted for “perfect nude lip shades that are easy to apply on the go” with Sisley Phyto-Lip Twists in #1 Nude and #2 Baby ($50 each). The songstress also took a compact mirror “but that was it, as her oxidized Calvin Klein steel box only fit a phone, compact and the Sisley lip twists,” reveals Dreadon.
Inside Chinese actress Zhu Zhu’s black-and-white Plexiglas clutch by Stella McCartney were Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Finish powder compact ($45) and Charlotte Tilbury lipstick ($32). “A lip touch-up is a staple in anyone’s purse,” says her makeup artist, Vincent Oquendo. “And CharlotteTilbury packaging is very sleek and perfect for clutches.”
Where did Chung’s makeup artist, Tamah Krinsky, put her NARS Audacious Lipstick in Brigitte ($32) and Eyeko Mini Skinny Liquid Eyeliner ($16, full size) for touch-ups? In the secret pockets that lined Chung’s purple Erdem dress.
Makeup artist Tina Turnbow put Pacifica Devocean Natural Lipstick in Tenderness ($14) into her longtime client’s Altuzarra bag, but skipped a powder compact, explaining, “Keri likes glowing skin so doesn’t bring powder.”
Makeup artist Patrick Ta said he didn’t have to put much in the supermodel’s DVF black clutch thanks to her flawless skin — she only carried her Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipcolor in Born With It ($7.50) for touch-ups.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
After makeup artist Ana Marie Rizzieri prepped the sisters, she gave them pressed powder compacts and NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Lip Glosses ($7, available in June) in the neutral colors the designing duo had requested — Sandstorm for Mary-Kate and Soft Spoken for Ashley.
It’s no surprise that L’Oreal Paris Celebrity makeup artist Sir John sent Beyonce with her nude lip product, L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Lipcolor in Neverending Nutmeg ($13), although he says it’s such a long-lasting product that she probably didn’t need it. And “so she could apply it to her T-zone,” Sir John also gave her L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Powder ($13).
Elaine Offers tells Pret-a-Reporter that Moore took her L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Lipcolor ($13) and a few blotting papers in her black beaded Givenchy wristlet. “That’s all she needed, as we didn’t want a powdered look.”
Johnson had an extra hand to carry some of her touch-up products, such as the Sisley Nutritive Lip Balm ($74) that went into her friend’s coat pocket. In her own Chanel bag, which was a Chinese doll from the brand’s Russia collection, makeup pro Pati Dubroff sent Johnson with NARS Audacious Lipstick in Vanessa ($32) and a few pointed cotton buds in case her dramatic winged eyeliner smudged.
Although ck one global makeup artist Hung Vanngo says the ck one all day perfection lip color in jinx 200 (available in July) “stays on lips for hours, eliminating the need for touch-ups,” he still gave it to Byrne to carry in her Calvin Klein clutch, along with Tatcha Aburatorigami blotting papers ($12).
“The bags keep getting smaller and the phones keep getting bigger—space is a valuable commodity in those things!” says makeup artist Fiona Stiles, who prepped Banks for the gala. The pro is prepared, however: She carries thin plastic containers about the size of a quarter and slices lipstick into one (Monday night it was Avon Ultra Color Lipstick in Matte Nude ($8). Along with the lip shade, Stiles filled the Lee Savage clutch with a few Q-tips and a makeup wedge with a little powder on it, wrapped in a tissue. “There wasn’t even room for a tiny mirror,” says Stiles. “But thankfully her clutch was a shiny metal so she used that as a mirror instead.”
To carry in her Amanda Pearl bag, Dior makeup pro Shane Paish gave Munn Tatcha papers ($12) “to blot excess oil, but still keep the skin dewy,” and her lip products: Rouge Dior Contour Lipliner in 999 ($30) and Diorific Lipstick in Dolce Vita 014 ($40).

As with so many of her fellow red-carpet walkers, Mulligan carried her lipstick and blotting papers. Her makeup artist, Georgie Eisdell, told Pret-a-Reporter: “Carey wore a strong lip Tom Ford Matte Lip in Velvet Cherry, [$50] so I needed to send it with her so she could maintain it throughout the night. The blotting papers absorb any excess shine so I gave her a few, just in case.”
Usually makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan carries small plastic containers, ideal for compact clutches, that can hold swipes of lipstick and a bit of powder for touch-ups, but for the gala, client Grimes carried a small train case that easily held her mark Gloss Gorgeous Stay on Lip Stain in Bare ($11) and oil blotting sheets.
Nick Barose told the Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur actress to touch up with Dolce & Gabbana Pressed Powder ($60) “in the car just before coming to the red carpet and switch to Tatcha blotting papers ($12) for the rest of the night to keep the face fresh and not too powdery.” He says, “Most people keep powdering and by the second hour, it gets cakey.” The makeup pro also tucked Dolce & Gabbana Shine Lipstick in Love 136 ($33.50) into the Brit beauty’s pale blue Dolce & Gabbana clutch.
For her Tory Burch bag, makeup artist Mai Quynh gave Maggie Q her Tory Burch lipstick in Pas Du Tout ($32) “to keep color looking fresh” along with a powder puff that’s pre-dipped into powder for reducing shine. “I definitely have to pick to-go products based on their size with bags so tiny lately,” says Quynh.
