STXfilms has acquired the Michael Bay-produced pandemic thriller Songbird for North America and the U.K.
Bay recently overcame novel coronavirus production hurdles to wrap production on Songbird, which is directed by Adam Mason.
Set two years in the future during a pandemic lockdown, when a virus vaccine is elusive, Songbird tells of the budding love story between a motorbike courier named Nico, played by K.J. Apa, who has rare immunity, and Sara (Sofia Carson), a young artist.
Bay produced Songbird with Adam Goodman and Andrew Sugerman’s Invisible Narratives, and Catchlight Films.
The movie was one of the first projects to go into production in Los Angeles with the lifting of a lockdown and the introduction of new safety restrictions, although production was briefly shut down by SAG-AFTRA.
“This year has irrevocably changed the way people interact with each other and their surroundings, and the reverberations will be profound; With all of 2020 underlying every frame of the movie, Songbird will be relevant, moving, and sentimental as a love story, while also scary as hell,” Adam Fogelson, chairman of STXfilms Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.
Director Mason also wrote the Songbird script with Simon Boyes.
The ensemble cast includes Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Jenna Ortega, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser and Demi Moore.
The producer credits are shared by Jeanette Volturno, Jason Clark, Marcei Brown and Eben Davidson, while Michael Kase executive produces.
The deal was negotiated by ICM Partners and Endeavor Content, along with Goodman and Sugerman on behalf of Invisible Narratives.
Endeavor Content is handling international sales for the film.
