Michael Douglas admits he lied about having throat cancer.
While speaking to Samuel L. Jackson on ITV’s This Morning, as part of Male Cancer Awareness Week, Douglas revealed how he was dealing with tongue cancer rather than throat cancer.
“This was right before I had to go on a big tour for [Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps], so we kind of said there’s no way we can cancel the tour and say we don’t feel well. … You’ve got to tell them,” the Emmy-winning actor told Jackson on the daytime show. “I said, ‘You’ve just got to come out and just tell them I’ve got cancer and that’s that.’ ”
Douglas continued: “But the surgeon said, ‘Let’s just say it’s throat cancer.’ I said ‘OK, you don’t want to say it’s tongue cancer?’ I said ‘Why’s that?’ and he said, ‘Well, if you really want to know why, if we do have to have surgery it’s not going to be pretty. You’ll lose part of you jaw and your tongue and all of that stuff.’ So I said, ‘OK sure.’ “
The 69-year-old actor was diagnosed with stage-four cancer in August 2010 and subsequently underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments. He has said he has recovered from the disease.
In June, Douglas told to the U.K.’s The Guardian newspaper that he contracted throat cancer as a result of having oral sex. The actor’s rep then responded by telling the Associated Press that Douglas was not talking about his cancer specifically, but rather the causes of cancer in general. However, The Guardian posted part of the audio from the interview between Xan Brooks and Douglas, which made it clear he was referring to himself, specifically.
Last month, Douglas received an Emmy for his role as Liberace in HBO’s Behind the Candelabra.
