Director Michel Gondry cut his teeth directing videos for some of the biggest names in music, from The Rolling Stones to Radiohead to The White Stripes. Like his past work, Gondry’s latest short hops along to percussive beats. But in this case, drums are swapped out for the clinking, clanking sounds of run-of-the-mill gym equipment.
Produced by LCD Soundsystem’s Phil Mossman for Gillette’s “Build for Training” Program, Gondry’s video transforms a recording studio into a training facility, with star football players standing in for the instruments. Defensive Backs Champ Bailey and Kayvon Webster of the Denver Broncos, Lineman Ramon Foster of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Running Backs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard of the Cincinnati Bengals and former Notre Dame offensive guard Mike Golic, Jr. all contribute their kicking, punching, and benchpressing skills to the innovative spot.
“Working with Gillette and top NFL players to create something that is so unique has been amazing,” said Michel Gondry. “It has been a great opportunity to work on a program that combines music, sports and cinematography.”
Gondry’s latest film, Mood Indigo starring Audrey Tautou, arrived in France April 24 (no plans for a U.S. release have been announced). The director shared a best original screenplay Oscar with Charlie Kaufman for his work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
