Although this isn’t the first time the first lady has been spotted in Alaia, her decision to wear a non-American label is surprising considering she has worn U.S.-based brands in past years for the presidential address (a raisin-colored long-sleeve number by Isaac Mizrahi in 2010, a silk Rachel Roy sheath in 2011, a deep blue dress by L.A.-based designer Barbara Tfank in 2012 and a glittery two-tone gown by N.Y.-based designer Jason Wu in 2013).
