First Lady Michelle Obama donned a sapphire blue dress by Los Angeles-based designer Barbara Tfank for the State of the Union address. The designer described the sheath as a “criss cross bodice cap-sleeved slim dress in silk twill.” Added sparkle included a tasteful pop of embellishment at the neckline.

Mrs. O also wore Barbara Tfank — a floral print dress from the resort collection — last May for a Buckingham Palace visit where she greeted the Queen and met Duchess Catherine (aka Kate Middleton) for the first time. The 1950s-style fit-and-flare dress that she topped with a cropped petal pink jacket received mixed reviews (some fashionistas deemed it too conservative). The First Lady also paired a printed emerald green cocktail dress by the designer with pink pumps and pearls for a look reminiscent of Jackie O at an award ceremony in 2010.

The third time’s definitely the charm. Mrs. O’s latest look is clean, classic and effortlessly chic (not to mention the perfect shade of Democratic blue).
The designer, who started her career as a costume designer and has said that her focus is on creating “timeless” looks, will show her latest collection during New York Fashion Week on February 13. Tfank’s spring 2012 collection was inspired by some of Elizabeth Taylor’s most iconic on-screen styles.
