[Spoiler warning: This story reveals the end of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know No. 5, released Wednesday in comic book stores and digitally. Do not read further if you do not want to know the ending of the issue.]
Big things are happening in the Mignolaverse — the fictional universe of comics created by Hellboy’s Mike Mignola — with this week’s issue of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know teasing the least expected comeback of them all.
At the end of the issue, agents of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense make a genuinely unexpected discovery at the site of their former headquarters, which were destroyed in last year’s Cometh The Hour series: a coffin containing what seems to be the body of none other than Hellboy, who appears to be opening his eyes …
If this is the return of Hellboy to the B.P.R.D., that’s a big deal; the character died in 2011’s Hellboy: The Fury, with the subsequent series Hellboy in Hell — written and drawn by Mignola — running from 2012 through 2016, ending with the character eventually surrendering his mission of protecting the world from the threat of the supernatural. Or, at least, so it seemed at the time.
“For a very long time we’ve known where this series was going,” Mignola tells Heat Vision.
Mignola, who co-writes the comic with Scott Allie, with art coming from Laurence Campbell, adds: “The reveal at the end of issue five was planned years ago and I sincerely hope it catches readers by surprise. The internet being what it is, it’s not easy to keep secrets these days, but I’m hopeful fans will help us out and keep a lid on things for awhile, until more people have had a chance to read the comic.”
More about Hellboy’s potential return will be revealed in upcoming months.
