One month after it was reported that Mindy Kaling is pregnant with her first child, the 38-year-old has confirmed the happy news.
In a preview for a new Sunday Today interview with NBC’s Willie Geist, which will air in its entirety Sept.10, The Mindy Project executive producer and star revealed that she’s “really excited” about the next chapter of her life.
“It’s so unknown to me,” she told Geist of her impending motherhood. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling.”
Details of her pregnancy, including her due date, the baby’s gender and the identity of the father, were not revealed in the preview; however, the comedienne did expound on the influence of her own mother when it comes to how she will parent her child.
“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” she notes. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”
Another perk of parenthood, she adds, will be the prerogative to criticize other parents. “It’s so easy to criticize parenting until you’re a parent,” she joked. “I’ll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child.”
Confirmation of her pregnancy is a bit of a life-imitating-art moment for Kaling, who plays a gynecologist on her hit Hulu series who has also just entered motherhood. The sixth and final season of The Mindy Project will premiere Sept. 12.
