When it comes to wearing bright colors and mixed patterns on the small screen, no one seems to embrace bold clothes more than Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project. Kaling love clothes, after all, and luckily costume designer Salvador Perez is well aware of, and up for, any sartorial challenges.
“Part of a costume designer’s job is to help the story move along,” says Perez. “People may not realize but for every episode, there’s at least one custom-made garment — sometimes two.”
Adds Kaling: “We started doing these custom pieces, a couple a year, and they’d be big deals, but then I started getting greedy and I said, ‘Sal, I want one per episode.’ It’s an enormous amount of work, but he did it.”
Ahead of The Mindy Project‘s midseason return on Hulu on Feb. 14, check out the clip above to see how Perez and his team go from concept to completion.
