Channel Four series dominated the virtual Diversify TV Excellence Awards during the MIPCOM Online+ market on Tuesday.
The fourth annual MIPCOM awards show that champions diversity and inclusion, held in Paris and live-streamed, saw the U.K. broadcaster’s Feel Good! series from Objective Productions win for best scripted representation of LGBTQ+ characters.
“It shows that really specific stories can resonate with audiences across all demographics,” Mae Martin, the star, co-creator and co-writer of Feel Good! said when accepting the trophy virtually.
Channel Four drama The Accident from indie producer The Forge won for best scripted representation of disability, while the award for best non-scripted representation of race and ethnicity went to The School That Tried to End Racism, from indie producer Proper Content.
The awards, now in their fourth year, spotlight excellence across the global TV industry in programming that draw characters and themes from the BAME, LGBTQ+ and disabled communities.
With French singer and actor Kiddy Smile hosting the event, the trophy for best non-scripted representation of LGBTQ+ people went to the Japanese documentary Jake and Charice, from NHK and Documentary Japan.
Other winners included the Canadian reality series Employable Me Canada! from Enjoyable Me Productions winning for best non-scripted representation of disability. “We’d like to thank our job seekers and their families for letting us into their hearts and homes to challenge the stereotypes around their employment,” Penny Wheelwright, executive producer for Canada’s Employable Me!, said in accepting the award from her remote home in Canada.
And the trophy for best scripted representation of race and ethnicity went to Blackfella Films’ Total Control from Australia’s ABC network, while the award for best kids programming was picked up by Sticky Pictures’ And Then Something Changed, which also airs on Australia’s ABC.
To qualify for the Diversify Awards, TV shows have to reflect race and ethnicity, LGBTQ or disabled communities and have aired on a linear or digital platform.
