Belgium TV show Public Enemy has taken the Buyers’ Choice Award in MIPTV’s first international drama competition.
The show was selected from 12 international shows in the official selection, including Bodo (Poland), Bordertown (Norway), Ramona (Chile), I Know Who You Are (Spain), Section Zero (France), Ku’damm 56 — Rebel With a Cause (Germany), The A Word (U.K.), Mathilde (Russia), The Secret (U.K.), Medici: Masters of Florence (France and Italy) and Victoria (U.K.)
The daylong screenings section was added to the TV confab to showcase the best in new international drama from around the globe.
The jury of international buyers included Sarah Wright, director of acquisitions for the U.K.’s BSkyB; Aline Marrache-Tesseraud, senior vp international SVOD global acquisitions for France’s CanalPlus; Ruediger Boess, executive vp group acquisitions for Germany’s ProSiebenSat1; Anette Romer, head of acquisitions for Denmark’s TV2; Zelda Stewart, head of acquisitions for Italy’s Mediaset; and Ignacio Barrera, head of the acquisitions department for Latin America’s Albavision.
Wright announced the winner onstage, calling Public Enemy a “brave” show that “will work in a non-linear and linear environment, with twists and turns, and felt very fresh and innovative.”
The shows in competition were selected by an international panel of creators and showrunners including The Refugees and Velvet showrunners Teresa Fernandez-Valdes and Ramon Campos Saez, The Mentalist and The Americans executive producer Chris Long, And Then There Were None and Casual Vacancy executive producer Sarah Phelps, The Killing creator Soren Sveistrup, and Deutschland 83 creator Anna Winger.
