MIPTV is introducing a Drama Screenings section at this year’s confab.
MIPDrama Screenings will feature 12 programs selected from around the world, which will premiere at the confab and compete for the Buyers’ Choice Award, organizers announced Tuesday.
The programs in the official selection include Poland’s Bodo, Finland’s Bordertown, Spain’s I Know Who You Are, Germany’s Ku’damm 56, Russia’s Mathilde, Italy’s Medici: Masters of Florence, Belgium’s Public Enemy, Chile’s Ramona, France’s Section Zero and three from the U.K.: The A Word, The Secret and Victoria.
The selected programs were nominated by a jury of creators and showrunners including The Refugees’ showrunners Teresa Fernandez-Valdes and Ramon Campos Saez, The Mentalist showrunner Chris Long, Casual Vacancy executive producer Sarah Phelps, The Killing creator Soren Sveistrup and Deutschland 83 co-creator Anna Winger.
Conference organizer Reed Midem’s new drama advisory board will vote on the Buyers’ Choice prize. The board includes BSkyB’s director of acquisitions Sara Wright, CanalPlus’ svp international SVOD global acquisitions Aline Marrache-Tesseraud, ProSiebenSat1 evp group acquisitions Ruediger Boess, TV2 (Denmark)’s head of acquisitions Anette Romer, Mediaset Italy’s head of acquisitions Zelda Steward and Albavision’s head of acquisitions Ignacio Barrera.

Keynote speeches will be given by best-selling author and The Five executive producer Harlan Coben, Vivendi Content president Dominique Delpot, RTL Group’s co-CEO Guillaume de Posch, Fox futurist Ted Schilowitz and Richard Dickson, president and CEO of Mattel, which has been named brand of the year.
This year’s theme will be “The Power of Fans” and how social media and digital traction is “becoming more and more important to the success of a show,” said Laurine Garaude, director of Reed Midem’s TV division.
As previously announced, A+E’s Roots will make its world premiere on the opening night, and the closing dinner will see the Medailles d’Honneur awarded to a handful of influential global TV execs.
The prior weekend will be once again devoted to MIPFormats and MIPDoc for factual and documentary programming. Newen Group CEO of content Bibiane Godfroid and ITV Studios president Maria Kyriacou will be among those giving keynotes slated for Apr. 2 in the formats program. Morgan Spurlock will keynote in the documentary section.
National Geographic’s The Story of God, narrated by Morgan Freeman, will make its world premiere in the documentary section April 3.
MIPFormats and MIPDoc run April 2-3. MIPTV runs April 4-7 in Cannes.
