Netflix is taking Robert Rodriguez‘s new series, From Dusk Till Dawn, to its global network of on-demand channels.
The 10-episode hourlong series, based on the vampire horror film franchise Rodriguez created, will go out on the El Rey Network in the U.S., premiering on Tuesday, March 11.
On March 12, Netflix will bow the premiere episode of Dusk Till Dawn on its online services in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, the Netherlands and the Nordic territories in Europe. On March 19, the show will go out on Netflix in Latin America. It will be labeled “a Netflix original series” in those territories.
Subsequent episodes will be available on a weekly basis. This is in contrast to Netflix’s release strategy with its in-house productions, such as House of Cards, for which it puts all episodes of a single series online at once to encourage binge viewing.
El Rey Network is producing the Dusk Till Dawn series in association with Rodriguez International Pictures, FactoryMade Ventures and Miramax. It is the first TV drama for both Rodriquez and El Rey, the network the director launched last year in cooperation with Univision. The English-language channel targets Latino audiences in the U.S. and features a mix of feature films and series focusing on the action, sci-fi and grindhouse genres. Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures control the El Rey Network with a minority stake held by Univision Networks & Studios.
From Dusk Till Dawn stars D.J. Cotrona (G.I.Joe: Retaliation) as Seth Gecko, a bank robber forced to flee across the boarder to Mexico with his violent brother Richie Gecko (Zane Holtz). The brothers kidnap the family of a former pastor, played by Robert Patrick, to get them to smuggle them over in their RV. Hot on their tail are a pair of Texas rangers, played by Don Johnson and Jesse Garcia. But once they get into Mexico, a trip to a strip club full of vampires adds the undead to their list of problems.
The series is based on Rodriquez’ 1996 feature, starring George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis. It earned some $25 million at the U.S. box office. Miramax co-produced and distributed the Dusk Till Dawn film and its two sequels.
“I am excited about working with Netflix and Miramax to build an international audience for our series,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “This property has always resonated for viewers around the globe, and we believe that it will be just as relevant for this new generation of fans.”
Rodriguez is an executive producer on the Dusk Till Dawn series together with showrunner Juan Carlos Coto and El Rey co-founders John Fogelman and Christina Patwa of FactoryMade Ventures. Diego Gutierrez, whose credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Without a Trace, is the head writer and co-executive producer of the series.
