Welcome to Sweden received a warm welcome at MIPTV, with Sweden’s TV4 announcing a second-season pickup for the series on the opening day of the television confab.
The Amy and Greg Poehler-produced comedy series has been TV4’s highest rated show in young demographics and second highest in the ratings since its premiere March 21.
The network has ordered an additional 10 episodes of the series produced by the brother-and-sister team. The storyline is based on Greg’s real life experience as an accountant who falls in love with a Swedish girl and follows her home to the Nordic country.
It co-stars Oscar-nominee Lena Olin, Illeana Douglas, Patrick Duffy and Swedish actress Josephine Bornebusch.
“It’s an amazing feeling to create a show to which people are responding so favorably. We intend to make season two even better,” said Greg Poehler in the announcement.
NBC has picked up the first season for a July premiere in the U.S.
“Television viewers are interested in stories that stretch beyond their borders, which is what Welcome to Sweden can deliver, making it all the more fun to produce,” added eOne executive vp global production Carrie Stein.
Welcome to Sweden is produced by eOne, TV4 and Syskon, with Stein executive producing for eOne and Frederik Arefalk for TV4. eOne handles the worldwide rights to the series in all media.
