Miss Saigon is back.
The 1989 blockbuster musical by the Les Miserables team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, currently enjoying a hit London revival, will return to Broadway in spring 2017, producer Cameron Mackintosh announced Thursday. The show will play at a Shubert theater, with exact dates and venue to be announced.
The limited Broadway engagement will run through Jan. 15, 2018, before embarking on a national tour, to begin in Providence, R.I. The show will then hit Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington, Philadelphia and more than 50 other cities.
The production will star Jon Jon Briones and Eva Noblezada, the acclaimed leads of the current London run, directed by Laurence Connor.
“It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly 25 years since Miss Saigon first opened in New York, but if anything, the tragic love story of the show has become even more relevant today with the conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq,” said Mackintosh, also noting that Connor’s staging takes a “grittier, more realistic approach” than the original production.
Miss Saigon tells the story of a young bar girl named Kim, orphaned by the war in Vietnam, who falls in love with Chris, an American GI — but their lives are torn apart by the fall of Saigon.
The musical first opened on Broadway in 1991 and went on to play nearly 10 years. It earned 11 Tony nominations and three wins, including one for Lea Salonga, who has recently made her own return to Broadway in Allegiance.
