As of now there’s only one film left in the Hunger Games franchise, but in a new interview, Francis Lawrence, the director of the final two installments, discusses the possibility for more.
MTV asked Lawrence whether he, Lionsgate or author Suzanne Collins were discussing any sequels beyond The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2. He replied, “Everybody is thinking about it, and talking about it.”
“I just think that one has to go into that world carefully. Because I think a huge part of what makes the stories great is that it was really built on this idea of the consequence of war, and you have an amazing character like Katniss at the center of it,” Lawrence said. “And so to just say, ‘Oh, we’re still in the Hunger Games world’ I think is really risky, and you need to make sure that you have something new to say, and either new characters need to be created that are just as compelling as Katniss.” (Either…or what? “It’s a tricky thing, but I’m definitely open to talking about it, and I think everybody’s thinking about it,” continued the Mockingjay director. “Everybody loves the world and the ideas.”
With Harry Potter and Twilight finding ways to expand their franchises, the idea for a Hunger Games expansion is not so far-fetched. But would that involve an entirely new set of characters, or would Collins expand on the current characters’ lives? (We won’t say more, to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t read the books.) Could we see a pre-Hunger Games world? A prequel centering on President Snow as a child?
