Those watching Sunday’s Tony Awards red carpet might have felt a distinct sense of deja vu: The parade of famous faces looked weirdly similar to last week’s CFDA Awards, or the Met Gala. The reason? The appearance of a slew of models and designers who seemingly have nothing to do with theater.

Anna Wintour made it her mission to elevate the Tonys’ style game, and along with fashion PR firm KCD, Vogue, Teen Vogue and Vanity Fair, she appears to have done just that. But the results were a little confusing. Sure, the various Broadway stars and nominees — Ruth Wilson, Carey Mulligan, Elisabeth Moss — looked particularly stunning per usual, thanks perhaps in part to pro styling advice and a concerted support effort, but there seemed to be just as many if not more out-of-place personalities in attendance.
Kendall Jenner attended with Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa, model Grace Mahary went with the Public School designers, Vanessa Axente was escorted by Joseph Altuzarra, Constance Jablonski by Wes Gordon, and Bella Hadid by Prabal Gurung. Hilary Rhoda instagrammed a shot of herself with part of that crew, plus fellow catwalker Joan Smalls. Sort of raises the question, why?

So did Wintour make the Tonys more chic or just add a heavy dose of fashion via her own peeps? For his part, Zac Posen dressed many of the actual thespians, representing perhaps the best and most authentic blend of the two worlds. He walked the red carpet with the iconic Bernadette Peters, who looked gorgeous in a fitted architectural gown by her date, and also dressed host Kristin Chenoweth, winner Annaleigh Ashford, nominee Judy Khun, Debra Messing, Jennifer Grey and Laura Michelle Kelly.
So while there was significantly more fashion star power at the historically dusty awards, the question is, did it actually make the show better? What do you think of the fashion takeover at the Tonys?
