LONDON — The Monty Python reunion stage show on July 1 sold out quickly on Monday, with organizers immediately announcing four additional dates.
The show will now run July 1-5 at London’s O2 Arena, operated by live event promoter AEG Live, with known but updated comedic material from the group. The BBC reported Monday that the initially announced single show sold out in less than a minute after tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. London time, leading to the announcement of additional dates in less than an hour.
Later in the day, all shows were shown as having sold out on the ticketing site.
The five remaining members of the U.K. comedy troupe — John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones — announced the reunion last week. The sixth Python, Graham Chapman, died in 1989.
Python members had signaled that additional show dates were possible if the one promised show sells well, but they didn’t provide further details.
Some U.K. media reports on Monday suggested the Pythons could also announce a performance at L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl. Cleese last week had described a show there as one of his favorite Python memories.
The comedy group became famous with TV sketch show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. It then made such films as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Life of Brian and Monty Python’s the Meaning of Life.
They later went on to pursue successful solo careers.
“The stars of Monty Python … will perform live on stage together at the O2 for the first time since appearing at the Hollywood Bowl in September 1980,” the ticket website says.
