Among the fiction titles set to screen at Morelia’s ninth edition in October is Paula Markovitch‘s dirty war drama El Premio (The Prize), winner of two Berlin Silver Bear awards. The film also won best picture earlier this year at the Guadalajara Film Festival.
Other features in competition include Kyzza Terrazas‘ El Lenguaje de los Machetes (The Language of Machetes), a directorial debut produced by Mexican actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna; Paraisos Artificiales (Artificial Paradises), the first feature from documentary filmmaker Yulene Olaizola (Shakespeare and Victor Hugo’s Intimacies); and Nos Vemos, Papa (See You, Dad), from Lucia Carreras, co-writer of the Camera d’Or winner Leap Year.
Rounding out the competition section are Matias Meyer‘s Cristero War period piece Los Ultimos Cristeros (The Last Cristeros); Fecha de Caducidad (Expiration Date), from former Guadalajara Film Festival director Kenya Marquez, newcomer Hatuey Viveros‘ drama Mi Universo en Miniscula (My Minuscule Universe), produced by Nicolas Celis (We Are What We Are); and Hari Sama‘s sophomore feature El Sueno de Lu.
The documentary section, a focal point of the festival, features nearly two dozen works, including such standouts as Tatiana Huezo‘s El Lugar Mas Pequeno (The Tiniest Place); Cannes entry El Velador (The Night Watchman), from Natalia Almada; and Rios de Hombres, the second work of Sundance Audience Award winner Tin Dirdamal (De Nadie).
Morelia, one of Mexico’s top tier film fests, runs from Oct. 15-23. In past editions, the festival has drawn special guests such as Terry Gilliam, Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro. Festival organizers said they will announce this year’s guests and the opening film at a later date.
