Maroon 5’s Adam Levine Vs. MTV’s Video Music Awards: Artists React to Singer’s Comments (Video)

Adam Levine sparked controversy over the weekend, when he tweeted some choice words to MTV over their upcoming Video Music Awards.

On Aug. 27, just one day before the VMAs, Levine wrote, “the VMA’s. one day a year where MTV pretends to still care about music. I’m drawing a line in the sand. f*** you VMA’s.”

Sticking to his guns, the Maroon 5 frontman later added, “still waiting to have my ‘jerry macguire mission statement moment of deep regret…’ not happening. phew!”

The Hollywood Reporter was on hand at the VMA red carpet, asking fellow rockers whether Levine had a point, or if it was much ado about nothing.

“I really don’t know what the f*** he’s talking about, why the f*** he cares now,” slammed the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney. “It’s not like they just started not playing videos that much. I’d rather watch the Jersey Shore than a Britney Spears video. That’s the f***ing truth.”

“To a certain extent they do care about music, I know they aren’t putting on too many music videos and all that stuff,” said Sameer Gadhia of Young the Giant. “I guess for us we’re kind of biased, because we’re here because of them.”

Adding, “I don’t mean to be a little bitch…”

“I can understand why he’d say that,” Joel Madden offered. “MTV used to be a very music centric place and now it’s not quite as centered or focused on music. But it’s become a lifestyle channel and I think music is still very important.

“Musicians and rock stars and entertainers create the flavor for everyone,” he continued. “And MTV is always gonna be a place where they live. No matter whether they play videos or not.”

MTV responded to Levine’s comments with, “Soooo you’ll be tuning in at 9/8C tomorrow right? BTW, bonus points if you TwitPic your 2004 Moonman!”

Maroon 5 won the Best New Artist award in 2004 for “This Love.”
