The Face — a good name for a new model competition reality show — is being developed by Oxygen Media, with supermodel Naomi Campbell behind the launch and slotted as host.
Aspiring models who make the cut will compete to become “the face” of a national major brand, so there’s real money at stake here. Not only that, Campbell — unlike America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks — is a serious supermodel who still walks in many major shows and has ongoing relationships with major designers including Donatella Versace and Dolce & Gabbana. She still appears in major ad campaigns, even though she’s 42, a landmark age in the modeling world.
Auditions and castings for model contestants are taking place in New York and L.A. on July 21 and July 28. Women who are young, slim, very attractive and 5-foot-7 or taller are invited to apply. Models who land the show will be mentored and challenged by some of the world’s most successful supermodels. And Campbell’s friends — Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford — are definitely in that category; these “supes,” as they’re called, grew up together in the modeling business in New York, Milan and Paris and on the runways.
STORY: Naomi Campbell to Star in Oxygen Modeling Competition Series
There’s no doubt this kind of show could garner a lot of viewers and curiosity; who doesn’t want to see how supermodels train young, naive, even gawky wannabe models from all over America? However, Campbell, super as she is, also is notorious for anger management issues: How is she going to keep her cool on a show like this? Does she have the personality and composure to be a reality show host? After all, Heidi Klum, as we know, is cool as a cucumber, and an amazing business tycoon.
Perhaps seeing how much fame and money Banks has racked up will be Campbell’s inspiration.
If The Face is just casting, chances are we won’t see an episode till 2013, so we’ll have to wait till them to see how she pulls it off.
One thing is sure: Her clothes will be amazing!
