Back in the day, supermodels had to work a lot harder to achieve the kind of success that made Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford household names, not to mention runway legends. But social media has changed the modeling game, with Cara, Kendall, Gigi and Karlie among today’s one-name-only stars, or, as Vogue‘s September 2014 issue dubbed them, the Instagirls. And Naomi Campbell has thoughts about that.
While appearing on The Meredith Vieira Show, the supermodel icon shared that this current wave of It girl models doesn’t have to work quite as hard as their ’90s predecessors, thanks to the ease of social media allowing their success to balloon almost overnight.
“We had to earn our stripes and take our stepping stones to get to where we have gotten to accomplish what we have achieved to this date,” Campbell said of her generation of supermodels. “I kind of feel like, my God, we’ve worked so hard, and we are still working at it. Then it just comes like that for them, but I sometimes believe easy come, easy go. So I am actually grateful for the way I had my career. I wouldn’t want it any other way. So that’s for them, this is me.” Well, in the meantime, at least Campbell knows how to send a tweet and Instagram these days.
