Since the news of her shocking resignation as executive chairman of Net-a-Porter, the company she founded in 2000, Dame Natalie Massenet has been doing an excellent job of keeping her next move under wraps.
Eighteen months later, however, she has finally confirmed her future plans: Massenet will join Farfetch, another luxury ecommerce retailer, as nonexecutive co-chairman, effective immediately.
The London transplant confirmed the news via Instagram on Tuesday morning, writing a lengthy caption describing her new role.
“I am delighted to announce that I am joining FARFETCH as non-executive Co-Chairman alongside Executive Co-Chairman, Founder and CEO José Neves,” she said. “In my new non-exec role I look forward to further realising FARFETCH’s potential, developing its global brand and strengthening its fashion industry partnerships.”
During the time we assume she was waiting out a noncompete agreement, Massenet busied herself with her role as the chairman of the British Fashion Council. She was responsible for revamping and rebranding the British Fashion Awards as the Fashion Awards, and she ignited speculation about her future in 2015 by registering a new company in the U.K., cryptically called “Imaginary Ventures Ltd.”
Though she resigned from her post within the luxury ecommerce realm, Massenet writes that she has been dreaming of her return.
“Over the past 18 months my entrepreneurial drive, and passion for how innovation in technology can transform the future of luxury remains undiminished,” she continued. “In 1999 when I first thought about selling fashion online, the world was just waking up to the possibility. Today we expect access to everything, anytime, anywhere. The tech and logistics platforms that power the best e-commerce today have new decentralised business models. If I were starting an e-commerce company today, I would do it very differently.”
Of her new home at Farfetch, she gushed, “FARFETCH aggregates the most beautiful fashion curated by the world’s best boutiques and designer stores with the widest selection of styles into ONE easy-to-shop and brilliantly conceived API-enabled platform. A simple idea that is staggeringly difficult to execute that FARFETCH has cracked!!” The company is currently valued at over $1 billion.
Massenet stepped away from Net-a-Porter in September of 2015 following the company’s merger with another ecommerce giant, Yoox.
