The Tony Awards on Sunday were transported to a lively Russian bash with a lively performance by the cast of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.
Tony nominee Josh Groban — who sampled his character’s ballad “Dust and Ashes” in the medley — makes his Broadway debut in the transfer of the off-Broadway hit, based on a 70-page section of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Nominees Denee Benton and Lucas Steele are also among the ensemble cast.
Directed by Rachel Chavkin, the electro-pop opera from composer, lyricist and book writer Dave Malloy is retooled from its original Russian dinner theater-style presentation. It led this year’s Tonys race with 12 nominations.
Honoring the best of the Broadway season, the awards were handed out in a ceremony that aired live on CBS from New York City. Kevin Spacey made his debut as the annual event’s emcee.
