On April 22, a group of Native American actors reportedly walked off the set of Adam Sandler‘s The Ridiculous Six for parts of the script they found disrespectful to women, elders and a misrepresentation of their Apache culture.
According to a script obtained by Gawker dated Dec. 7, 2012, the scenes in question occur within the first 15 minutes of the film. In the part of the script titled “Ext. Indian Village — Day” character Tommy refers to an “Indian child” as Beaver Breath.
“One thing that really offended a lot of people was that there was a female character called Beaver’s breath. One character says ‘Hey, Beaver’s Breath.’ And the Native woman says, ‘How did you know my name?” extra Loren Anthony told Indian Country Today Media Network.
The script goes on to describe a Native American woman squatting and peeing while smoking a peace pipe. A character described as Sexy Woman says, “Morning, Three Knives. I had a dream about you last night,” which character Tommy replies, “That’s nice, Sits-On-Face.” Character Frank chimes in and says, “Wow, someone’s got an admirer…” The script then describes the Sexy Woman squatting: “Sits-on-Face squats down behind the teepee and pees, while lighting up a peace pipe.”
Later in the script, character Flaming Wolf says, “Me never hear of him. I know a ‘Five Hairy Moles’ and a ‘One Eyebrow’ and my cousin ‘Four Pickles’ but no ‘Three Knives.’ Sorry,'” referring to Native Americans.
Character Will Patch says to Sits-on-Face in the script, “Say honey: how about after this, we go someplace and I put my peepee in your teepee?”
In a dialogue between characters Cicero and Sits-On-Face, Cicero begins, “So why don’t you give me the money you stoled, and we’ll be on our way,” to which Sits-on-Face replies, “You go now!” Cicero then tells her to sit down and calls her “Strawberry Tits.” Sits-On-Face replies, “My name not Strawberry Tits. I am Sits-on-Face,” and Cicero says back, “Well then I’m Stiff-in-Pants!”
Netflix dismissed the report about the Native Americans walking off set and provided the following statement on Wednesday: “The movie has ‘ridiculous’ in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous. It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of — but in on — the joke.”
Written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, The Ridiculous 6 will star Will Forte, Danny Trejo, David Spade, Nick Nolte and Rob Schneider, among others. Sandler is also set to appear in the film, which is being produced by Happy Madison Productions and will be released exclusively on Netflix.
