The U.S. Navy is challenging Disney’s attempt to trademark the name “Seal Team 6,” the counter-terrorism unit responsible for killing Osama bin Laden.
Days after news broke of bin Laden’s death, Disney filed an application May 3; it covered everything from clothing to games.
Then, on May 13, two applications were filed on behalf of the Navy.
The competing applications sought trademark status for “SEAL Team” posters and clothing, as well as “Navy SEAL” goods and services, identifying the Navy squad as an organization that “develops and executes military missions involving special operations strategy, doctrine and tactics,” according to Fox News.
Both Disney and the U.S. Navy have yet to comment.
Paul Fucito, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office spokesman, tells Fox none of the applications have been reviewed (the process usually takes about three months).
Meanwhile, interest in the elite special forces team continues to skyrocket.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that the book, SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper, is being rushed into stores this week ahead of its originally scheduled May 24 publication date.
