Neil Gaiman is hoping he can write a third Doctor Who episode, although the graphic novelist (The Sandman) fears he won’t get the chance during Peter Capaldi‘s run as the 12th Doctor, the Radio Times reported on Wednesday.
The Stardust and Coraline writer has already scripted two episodes of the Time Lord’s adventures, 2011’s “The Doctor’s Wife” and 2013’s “Nightmare in Silver,” and Gaiman revealed that he had an invitation to write more, but hasn’t been able to due to other commitments.
Speaking at a Q&A in New York with fellow author Audrey Niffenegger, Gaiman said: “Whenever I’m in the U.K. … I sneak into meetings with [the production team]. They say, ‘Can you do another one?!’ and I say, ‘Yes! But not yet!'”

Gaiman said that his hopes of writing an episode with Capaldi as the Doctor look set to be dashed. “Now I’m just sort of hoping that I can get one done while Peter Capaldi is still the Doctor, because it would be a very sad thing if I lost my chance to write for a grumpy, Scottish Doctor,” he said.
Gaiman also dropped hints as to what he would write about when got around to scripting his third episode. “I haven’t done an episode set on Earth yet,” he said, “and I haven’t created a new monster. So there are boxes left to tick. And there’s part of me that feels … I haven’t scared anybody yet. I’d love to do something that sends adults behind the sofa too and makes them wee.”
