LONDON – Newcomer Jeremy Irvine, fresh from his role in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, is to star as Pip in David Nicholls’ big screen adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations, directed by Mike Newell.
Irvine joins an ensemble cast that reads like a British who’s who that includes Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Coltrane, Ewen Bremner, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins, Tamzin Outhwaite, David Walliams and Holliday Grainger.
The indpedently-produced movie is scheduled to begin shooting Oct. 10 here in the U.K.
Produced by Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen under the duo’s Number 9 Films banner and by David Faigenblum on behalf of Ulti-Media, Newell’s movie is financed by BBC Films, the BFI Film Fund and U.S.-based Ulti-Media Group.
It details the story of young orphan Pip who is given a chance to rise from his humble beginnings thanks to a mysterious benefactor.
Moving through London’s class-ridden world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new found position to pursue the beautiful Estella, a spoilt heiress he’s loved since childhood.
Ulti-Media Group, Inc, is handling North American rights with HanWay Films dealing with worldwide sales.
Zygi Kamasa from Lionsgate U.K. will also executive produce and will distribute.
Universal has picked it up for Australia while Senator will distribute it in Germany.
