Most recently chief information officer for the conglomerate’s U.K. newspaper unit News International, he reports directly to chairman and CEO Murdoch. ?
Cheesbrough will be responsible for setting the company’s technology strategy and coordinating with senior leaders across the conglomerate “to develop new digital products and expand the digital footprint of its portfolio of businesses.”
In addition, “he will collaborate with technology teams at the publishing and education businesses and oversee the transition of IT systems relating to the company’s proposed separation into two distinct companies,” New Corp. said.
“Paul is the rare technologist who is both a visionary and a builder,” said Murdoch. “He will be a driving force as we continue to harness very real opportunities in digital that are deepening our brands’ connection with consumers.”
He added: “Paul has led a truly impressive digital reinvention of News International that has positioned our media properties at the forefront of the industry today.”
?At the U.K. newspaper unit since 2010, Cheesbrough moved it to more cloud-based technologies. Before joining News International, he served as chief information officer at the Telegraph Media Group, where he pioneered the development of various new digital products. Before that, he was the controller of digital media for the BBC.
