Rob Reiner‘s next directorial project, Being Charlie, has cast a pair of young stars, Nick Robinson and Morgan Saylor, and actor-musician Common to lead the cast.
Devon Bostick, Susan Misner, Ricardo Chavira and Cary Elwes have also joined the cast of the project, which is produced by Reiner and Simon Goldberg via their Castle Rock Entertainment. Johnson Chan‘s Jorva Entertainment Productions is also producing and financing the project with Stephanie Rennie.
Robinson will star as Charlie, an 18-year-old who breaks out of a youth drug treatment clinic, but when he returns home to Los Angeles, he’s given an intervention by his parents and forced to go to an adult rehab. There, he meets a beautiful but troubled girl, Eva, and is forced to battle with drugs, elusive love and divided parents.
Alan Greisman is executive producing with Lucas Jarach, Nicolas Veinberg and Blythe Frank.
The project, which is currently shooting in Salt Lake City, is a family event for Reiner: His son Nick Reiner wrote the script with Matt Elisofon.
Reiner’s recent directorial projects include And So It Goes starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton and The Magic of Belle Isle starring Morgan Freeman. The director-producer-actor is repped by CAA.
Robinson was the breakout star of 2013’s Kings of Summer, and has been building up a solid career since then. He’ll next be seen in Universal’s Jurassic World (out June 12), and then he’ll star in Sony’s YA adaptation The Fifth Wave. He’s repped by UTA, the Savage Agency and Principato-Young.
Saylor starred on Showtime’s Homeland, and was most recently seen on the big screen in McFarland, USA. She’s repped by UTA, and Management 360.
Common, along with John Legend, was a familiar face this awards season because of his hit song “Glory,” which was featured in Selma. It won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for original song. He also acted in the film, and his other recent projects include Run All Night and Now You See Me. Plus, as The Hollywood Reporter broke today, he has closed a deal to join the cast of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’ all-star action movie featuring DC Entertainment supervillains. He’s repped by CAA and Freedom Road Entertainment.
Bostick played Rodrick Heffley in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise and has appeared on TV shows The 100 and Aim High. He’s repped by Innovative Artists and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Misner’s credits include FX’s The Americans and the popular series The Good Wife. She’s repped by One Entertainment. Chavira is repped by Innovative.
Elwes‘ credits include The Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Days of Thunder, and on the TV side, The X-Files and Psych. He also wrote the screenplay for upcoming film Elvis & Nixon, and is repped by APA, LINK Entertainment and Felker Toczek.
Defiant Pictures arranged the financing along with CAA, which will represent the film’s domestic distribution rights.
