Nicole Richie had a wild slumber party in her hotel room during Paris Fashion Week. But before you jump to conclusions, read on.
“I ended up turning it into a girls trip,” Richie tells The Hollywood Reporter, having just flown from Paris to New York for a stint on NBC’s Today on Friday. “I got like five of my girlfriends to go — a few of them were working — and we were all staying in separate places. So the 19-year-old came into all of us, and we all piled into my hotel room. We had cots and there was a total of seven people in the room. It was so fun. I haven’t done that in years.”
Of course, she also shopped — hitting the Saint Laurent boutique (38, Rue de Faubourg Saint-Honore) and Montaigne Market (57 avenue Montaigne).
“I also ended up going to Anthony Vaccarello’s studio to meet him for the first time,” Richie says. “I’m such a big fan of his. He even gave me a dress that I wore to Carine Roitfeld’s magazine party.”
She sat in the front row for shows by Stella McCartney (wearing a black and white Stella design), Valentino (wearing a red Valentino strapless dress) and Givenchy. But another peak Paris fashion moment was meeting Jean Paul Gaultier when they appeared together on the French TV show, Le Grand Journal. “He is so funny. He did a sketch for me which I will be hanging.”
Did seeing such extravagant shows make the fashion personality, who designs lines for Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960, want to stage her own?
“I’m in no rush to show,” she explains. “I am still very new to this business. Winter Kate has only been around since 2010. This is only my third year, and I want to make sure that the identity of my brand is established. I started off with House of Harlow jewelry because I wanted to start small with something that was close to my heart. Then I moved into footwear, ready-to-wear, eyewear and now capsule collections for different retailers”
But Richie is sure of the direction she’s headed in. “Ultimately, House of Harlow will be a lifestyle brand,” she says. “I’m not sure when it will happen. But my next step is going to be home furnishings, everything from flatware to rugs.”
While she’s busy building her budding empire, Richie also serves as a mentor on Fashion Star, whose second season premieres at 8 p.m. Friday on NBC. For its sophomore installment, Richie and fellow mentors John Varvatos and Jessica Simpson divided the designers into teams.
“We all went to [executive producer] Ben Silverman after last season and told him we felt we didn’t have enough time with the designers,” she says. “And we wanted to give the designers the best experience we could.”
They read the designers’ bios and watched videos to make their choices. Says Richie: “My group is definitely a very artistic group, wild and out there, not taking direction easily. We call our group Team Fun.”
As a designer herself, Richie says the contestants don’t realize how lucky they are to be getting face time and one-to-one feedback on their collections. “To get this kind attention from three of the biggest retailer buyers is never going to happen in real life,” she says. “You don’t get that insight ever again to know what they are looking for and how Express will love something that Macy’s might hate. It’s invaluable.”
And though anyone who has ever watched Richie on the small screen can attest she’s outspoken, this time she’s keeping her personal opinions to herself. “It’s not about me telling them a hem should be shorter,” she says. “It’s about taking the direction of the buyers you are trying to appeal to and keeping your own vision.”
Has she worn anything put out by Team Fun?
“Nothing from the second season but only because I haven’t been able to get my hands on it yet,” she says. “I did wear Sarah Parrott’s white dress that she made for H&M last season that I love. And Kara Laricks was my favorite last year. But I couldn’t tell her at the time. Everything she made was awesome. She’s gonna go far.”
