Management and production company Anonymous Content has inked a deal with The New York Times to represent the newspaper on film and television projects, it was announced Wednesday.
“Our collaboration will push New York Times stories onto new screens and new platforms,” Anonymous Content’s Howie Sanders and Kassie Evashevski said in a statement.
The newspaper was previously repped by Todd Hoffman’s Storied Media Group on intellectual property deals.
Sam Dolnick, an assistant managing editor who is working on the film and television initiative, said the Times had “a good run and a good relationship” with Storied Media Group, but added that the industry has changed and the opportunity has grown even larger.
“The TV industry is changing in really dramatic ways,” he said. “It feels like a different moment in TV, and we think that there may be a place for us to play a different role than we ever have as well.”
Dolnick, a member of the family that controls the newspaper, said that producers, writers and directors call the Times every day to express interest in potential projects.
With the deal announced Wednesday, Dolnick said the Times is taking “a new approach” to that interest, and might even dabble in production. “We’re starting to explore what it looks like to be more ambitious and go on offense in some sense,” he said.
Last month, Anonymous Content inked a first-look deal with Conde Nast Entertainment, the film and television arm of the magazine company.
Dolnick said it’s too early to speculate how big of a business film and television could be for the Times, which has also invested heavily in both virtual reality and podcasts, two areas he helps oversee. With print advertising on the decline, the Times, like other legacy publishers, has been focused on creating new, digital-focused lines of business.
“If this works, then there will be revenue there, but we’re just getting going,” he said.
