PROVINCETOWN — The Audence Award for best narrative feature at the 16th annual Provincetown Film Festival went to David Frankel‘s One Chance, which stars James Corden in the true story of a luckless Welsh cell phone salesman who reverses his fortunes by warbling Puccini on Britain’s Got Talent. The Weinstein Co. release is due to hit theaters in the U.S. on Aug. 29.
Other winners of Provincetown’s audience honors, which are sponsored by HBO, were best documentary to Michael Rossato-Bennett‘s Alive Inside, an exploration of our relationship to music and its benefits to mind, body and spirit; and best short film to Jeff Dupre‘s Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace.

The John Schlesinger Award, presented to a first-time documentary or narrative filmmaker, went to Alan Hicks‘ uplifting doc Keep On Keepin’ On, about legendary jazz trumpeter Clark Terry and his mentoring bond with blind 23-year-old pianist Justin Kauflin. Produced by Quincy Jones, that film was acquired by Radius-TWC earlier this year out of the Tribeca Film Festival, where it also won the audience documentary award and a jury award for best director.
Provincetown added a new prize to its slate this edition with the Juice Award for a first or second narrative feature by a woman filmmaker, presented by New York-based production house Tangerine Entertainment. The inaugural nod went to writer-director-actress Desiree Akhavan‘s Appropriate Behavior, about a bisexual Brooklynite from an Iranian-American family, navigating life after a messy breakup.
As previously announced, this year’s Filmmaker on the Edge Award, presented to boundary-pushing innovators from across the industry, went to David Cronenberg. Patricia Clarkson won the Excellence in Acting Award, while Debra Winger received the Faith Hubley Career Achievement honor.
The festival also announced that dates for its 17th edition have been set for June 17-21, 2015.
