To celebrate 90 years of the Academy Awards, The Hollywood Reporter is bringing together every best actor winner in the history of the show in under 90 seconds. While Emil Jannings was the first recipient of the award for his roles in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh in 1929, back when actors could be nominated for multiple performances, Casey Affleck was the latest actor to take home the award for his performance in Manchester by the Sea.
Daniel Day-Lewis has won three best actor Oscars, holding the record for the men’s category, for his roles in My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Lincoln (2012).
While 89 actors have received the honor throughout the years, there have only been two stars who have won back to back: Spencer Tracy in 1938 for Captains Courageous and 1939 for Boys Town; and Tom Hanks in 1993 for Philadelphia and 1994 for Forrest Gump.
