Croatian filmmakers have chosen Dalibor Matanic‘s The High Sun as the country’s nomination for the best foreign-language film Oscar.
The High Sun, which focuses on three different love stories, set in three consecutive decades in two neighboring villages, premiered this year in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, where it won the jury prize.
A compassionate look at the recent history of war-torn Yugoslavia seen through the lens of the love stories, the film stars talented young actors Goran Markovic and Tihana Lazovic as war-crossed lovers.
Wednesday’s nomination was made by the Filmmakers Association of Croatia, which draws a committee of 15 members from across the profession, including actors, directors, producers, editors and others.
The film, which won best director and a host of other awards last month at the Pula Film Festival, beat six other contenders to win the national Oscar nomination.
The High Sun was produced by Kinorama, and Cercamon is handling international sales.
