Renowned composer and conductor John Williams on Thursday received his 50th Academy Award nomination. He has won five times.
“I’m deeply honored and grateful to the Academy for this recognition,” Williams said in a statement. “It’s been a privilege and a joy to revisit the Star Wars galaxy and to work with the brilliant director J.J. Abrams on this very special film.”
Best known as the creator of the Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Superman and Close Encounters of the Third Kind themes, the 83-year-old New York native was first nominated in 1967 for best scoring adaptation or treatment for Valley of the Dolls.
Williams was given the nod once more Thursday for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He has scored all seven films in the Star Wars film series, and was bestowed one of his five Oscars for the first pic in 1977.
Williams also won Oscar gold for best original score for Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Schindler’s List.
The Force Awakens also was nominated this year for best visual effects, best film editing, best sound editing and best sound mixing.
