Sam Smith may have defied the odds – and critics – to take home the Oscar for best original song on Sunday, but the musician wasn’t overly enthused by his own performance that night.
“It was the worst moment of my life,” he told BBC radio station 5 Live on his way into the Vanity Fair party after winning for the Spectre theme “Writing’s on the Wall,” beating favorite “Til It Happens to You” by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren.
“Singing was horrible. I hated every minute of it, I was so nervous,” Smith added.
The multiple Grammy winner also joked that having now claimed the Oscar – capping off an incredible couple of years for the Brit – it would be “only downhill” from here. “I’m going to retire, I’m done with music!” he said.
And while only Daniel Craig may know who is set to play James Bond in the next 007 film, Smith already has an idea for who should sing the theme song. “The Spice Girls,” he joked.
