It was a surprise when First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage last year at the Dolby Theatre to present the Oscar best picture honor, where Ben Affleck‘s Argo prevailed in the top category.
With a best picture field as competitive as it has been in years, the presenter for the top category has been characteristically kept under wraps. Who will read the envelope for the big award?
There is speculation that Sidney Poitier, who is confirmed as a presenter at the awards.
If the acclaimed actor does indeed present the big award and the winner happens to be 12 Years a Slave — one of the three frontrunners along with Gravity and American Hustle — there could be some Oscar history being made.
Poitier was the first black actor to win the Oscar for best actor, claiming the honor for Lilies of the Field at the 36th Academy Awards in 1964. (He was also presented with an honorary Oscar in 2001).
If 12 Years a Slave prevails, Poitier could present the best picture honor to Steve McQueen — who would be the first black director to helm an Oscar best picture winner.
Of course, nothing is certain at this time. The Academy has unveiled a long list of prior Oscar winners who will be presenting at the ceremony, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Anne Hathaway, Robert De Niro, Sally Field and Charlize Theron.
