Outgoing BBC director general Mark Thompson has held talks about becoming the new CEO of the New York Times Co., the Guardian reported.
The newspaper company is looking to fill the vacancy left by Janet Robinson’s departure in December after a run-in with chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. who has served as interim CEO.
The 54-year-old Thompson has said that he would leave his job as the head of the public broadcaster after the Summer Olympics in London. He is also considering other jobs, according to the Guardian.
The BBC recently started the interview process with candidates for the director general post and is hoping to announce his replacement in July.
The Guardian cited a source not connected to Thompson as saying that he had two meetings in London over the past four weeks about the New York Times Co. CEO role. Thompson, who currently lives in Oxford, has reportedly been interested in working in the U.S. His wife is American.
The New York Times Co. owns the New York Times and Boston Globe. Sulzberger is the controlling shareholder. The company declined to comment, the Guardian said.
