
"We all have that choice. Everyone thinks that they had a tough childhood, even if they came from the most privileged means, but it's tough to be a human being," says Linklater. "I wanted to portray someone who'd been dealt a hand. It wasn't a great hand, but it's the hand that he's dealt. And he handles whatever comes his way."

Boyhood writer-director Richard Linklater will receive this year’s Sonny Bono VIsionary Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s 26th annual PSIFF Awards Gala on Jan. 3. The fest will run Jan. 2-12.
Previous recipients of PSIFF’s Sonny Bono Visionary Award include Oscar-winning filmmakers Tom Hooper, Danny Boyle, Quentin Tarantino and Michel Hazanavicius.

“Richard Linklater’s latest feature film is the critically acclaimed Boyhood, a one-of-a-kind epic undertaking shot over the course of 12 years with the same cast,” PSIFF chairman Harold Matzner said in a statement. “For his creative innovations in filmmaking, The Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to present Richard Linklater with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award.”
Linklater’s past films include Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Waking Life, Tape, School of Rock, Before Sunset, A Scanner Darkly, Bernie and Before Midnight. Both Before Sunset and Before Midnight earned Linklater Oscar nominations for best adapted screenplay.
PSIFF previously announced that The Theory of Everything‘s lead actor Eddie Redmayne and Still Alice‘s lead actress Julianne Moore will receive this year’s Desert Palm Achievement awards, that Whiplash‘s supporting actor J.K. Simmons will receive this year’s Spotlight Award and that Rosamund Pike will be honored with its Breakthrough Performance Award.
