The many faces of James Franco continue in the first trailer for actor’s upcoming drama, Palo Alto.
The coming-of-age film follows a group of troubled high school students in the titular Northern California town. Franco plays Mr. B, a high school girls’ soccer coach who starts an affair with one of his players, April (Emma Roberts).
April also has a crush on angst-ridden artist Teddy (Jack Kilmer, Val Kilmer‘s son), who counts playing with switchblades as one of his favorite pastimes.
“I’m older, and I know that there aren’t a lot of good things around — and I know that you are really good,” Franco’s character tells Roberts’ character as he kisses her.
Franco has been in the news quite a bit lately, as he apologized this week for flirting online with a 17-year-old fan. Given his penchant for elaborate pranks, there had been speculation that the incident was staged to promote Palo Alto.
Nat Wolff, Chris Messina, Keegan Allen, and Val Kilmer also star.
Gia Coppola makes her directorial debut and wrote the script for Palo Alto, based on Franco’s short story collection of the same name. Gia is Francis Ford Coppola‘s granddaughter and Sofia Coppola‘s niece.
Tribeca Film will release Palo Alto in select theaters on May 9. The film premiered at the 2013 Telluride Film Festival.
