BERLIN – ABC’s 1960s period drama Pam Am won the best series prize at this year’s Rose d’Or awards, Europe’s most prestigious television honors. The series, which faces an uncertain future after its lackluster first season run, beat out two British shows: BBC’s crime drama The Runaway and The Jury from ITV, which stars Gerard Butler, to take the top series prize. Sony Pictures Television produced Pan Am and distributes the series worldwide.
British shows dominated most of the other Rose d’Or categories, however. Channel 4’s Twilight Zone-style anthology show Black Mirror won for best comedy program while the channel’s Friday Night Dinner took the best sitcom prize. The best children’s show honor went o the BBC’s Horrible Histories. Channel 4’s The Million Pound Drop won best game show and The Great British Bakeoff on BBC won for best lifestyle program.
Two German programs picked up Rose d’Or honors: Homevideo from pubweb NDR, which won best TV movie and the broadcast of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which won the best live event honor for producers Brainpool and broadcaster ARD.
Aussie reality show Go Back to Where You Came From won the Rose d’Or for best factual entertainment; the best arts documentary prize went to The Sound of Ole Bull from Norwegian channel NRK and high-school series Dream High from Korea’s KBS won best youth program.
The 2012 Rose d’Or awards were handed out at a gala ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland Friday night.
