Paris’ Series Mania kicked off its seventh edition with a splashy big-screen premiere at the city’s legendary Grand Rex theater of HBO’s Vinyl, with star Bobby Cannavale opening the 10-day television festival.
Speaking to the cheering crowd, Cannavale called the role of a music producer in Martin Scorsese’s seventies-set drama a “dream come true,” and said he hailed from “Jersey Nouvelle” to the delight of the audience.
The show had been three years in the making, and it took over a month to shoot the pilot, he said, giving the nearly two-hour premiere episode a cinematic feel on the big screen.
“I was only 3 years old in 1973, but by the time I grew up that music and the culture and the music of the seventies was something I very much responded to and was a fan of,” he said.
Sopranos creator David Chase also took to the stage in his role as president of the festival’s first international jury.
Chase said that he had been heavily influenced by the work of French New Wave directors Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. “I think it’s safe to say there would be no Sopranos without Truffaut and Goddard — I hope you remember those guys,” he said.
Series Mania could be renamed “binge fest,” with episodes of the most watchable shows from around the world playing on screens from morning until midnight at the city’s Forum des Images and UGC Les Halles, one of the largest movie multiplexes in the world.
X-Files and Man in the High Castle creator Frank Spotnitz, Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips, and best-selling author and The Five creator Harlan Coben are among the luminaries set to speak during the week. Oscar winner and American Crime Story star Cuba Gooding Jr. will give a master class.
AMC’s Jim Sturgess– and David Schwimmer-starrer Feed the Beast is set to make its world premiere before it hits U.S. screens in May, as is Wild Bunch’s — which produced Blue is the Warmest Color — first TV project, Four Seasons in Havana, and CanalPlus’ Sweden-set drama Midnight Sun.
Netflix’s first foreign-language series, Marseille, will reveal its first scenes during the fest before it drops online on May 5.
Series Mania runs through April 24.
