It’s only been a week since Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in Paris and already it’s becoming a Halloween costume — a controversial one, to say the least.
Costumeish released a “Parisian Heist Robbery Victim Costume Kit,” complete with white robe, long black wig, sunglasses, a fake gag and two feet of rope. It also includes a “$4 million dollar” plastic ring — clearly a reference to the expensive sparkler that was stolen by the armed, masked men.
Though the company doesn’t name-check Kardashian with the costume, which retails for $69.99, the description reads: “She has devoted her life to promoting American decadence, youth, and hedonism but all that flashy living caught up with her one night in Paris when armed men bound her, stole her jewelry and her peace of mind.”
Understandably folks online are outraged by the costume, making it clear that they’re not fans of the look.
“This is revolting. Ridiculing a woman who was the victim of a violent crime? You all should consult with a medical professional and determine what chemical in your brains is missing,” wrote one reviewer on the site. “What if your mother or sister had gone through this terrifying experience, would you think this was funny?”
Another person added: “She is a living breathing person who was held up at gunpoint. As annoying as she is, this is unacceptable.”
However, there are those that found the get-up funny, “Ordering this as we speak. Thank you for maximizing my schadenfreude this Halloween.”
Costumeish defended its decision.
“I’m sad that people are offended by it, but it is Halloween: It’s one day out of the year,” the company’s vp, Johnathon Weeks, told BuzzFeed. “Halloween should be a light-hearted, spirited party and people should be able to laugh at it and think it’s funny. We haven’t sold any yet, if that matters.”
Weeks added: “If people find it tasteless or they are offended by it, it’s Halloween. Maybe you should just shut your life out and not go outside.”
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Costumeish for additional comment.
This isn’t the first time the Kardashian-Jenner family has been the target for Halloween costumes. Caitlyn Jenner’s iconic Vanity Fair cover was re-created as the “Call Me Caitlyn Unisex Adult Costume,” causing the transgender community to be up in arms and launch a change.org petition to pull the outfit.
