Partners in Design highlights the latest design collaborations with a Hollywood bent, from brands teaming up with stars to new pairings between industry-loved brands and film- or TV-focused product lines.
Japanese-inspired fashion brand Uniqlo landed a partnership with Korean supergroup BTS for a line of BT21 men’s tees, released June 21 (starting at $14.90). The project is a collaboration with Line Friends, which worked with BTS to develop characters, named Koya, RJ, Shooky, Mang, Chimmy, Tata, Cooky and Van. The backstory details how Prince Tata left Planet BT and crashed into Earth with Van; the group of eight together want to become the “most famous” star in the universe, called The Universtar (not unlike the seven-member boy band).
On June 13, when announcing her new album Lover and upcoming single “You Need to Calm Down,” Taylor Swift dropped another bomb — she is collaborating with designer Stella McCartney on a line to be released closer to her August 23 album launch. “There’s so much whimsy and imagination and romance to the clothing that she designs. I’ve worn a lot of her stuff recently, and she’s heard the new album and this new collaboration is inspired by the Lover album,” Swift said on Instagram. “I’m really really honored that she would want to collaborate in this way.” Swift recently wore rainbow McCartney sneakers onstage at Wango Tango 2019.
Nike will be the official outfitter of Hawkins High, in a way — the footwear company announced on June 12 a Stranger Things capsule collection to provide athletic wear based on Hawkins, Indiana, where the Netflix show takes place. Stranger Things, which takes place in 1985, provides for a retro line featuring sweatsuits, tees and sneakers, dropping June 27. A second drop on July 1 corresponds to the July 4 release date of Stranger Things season three with red, white and blue Blazer Mids, Cortezs and Tailwind 79s with a firework sock liner (collection starting at $32).
A fave of Beyonce and Madonna, Ritch Erani is releasing a Cruel Intentions footwear collab on June 13 in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary. The heels are named after the female characters Annette (Reese Witherspoon), Cecile (Selma Blair) and Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar), which features a rosary necklace and the word “bitch” on the left shoe strap.
The industry’s go-to luxe vintage retailer What Goes Around Comes Around partnered with eBay for a capsule inspired by “Peace, Luxe and Rock and Roll” through June 20. The line offers 1,200 items from designers such as Hermès, Gucci, Chanel and Fendi (starting at $9.99). Keith Richards’ daughters Alexandra and Theodora Richards star in the campaign.
On June 10, model and designer Alexa Chung released an outerwear collection with British heritage fashion brand Barbour, including waterproof hooded rain jackets and waxed cotton jackets (starting at $429).
Snoop Dogg let his Dogg Pack collection loose with British footwear label Duke + Dexter in June. Some of the 1,000 pairs of limited-edition loafers, mules and slides bear marijuana motifs (starting at $210). “They’ve designed some dope pairs for me in the past and every time they create something fun and different,” Snoop said in a statement. “The original idea was to create loafers with the dice embroidered on — a smooth casino feel. We then built out the collection around a more ‘pool to party’ concept that can take you from your casual pool side vibes, all the way to your suave evening loafer feel.”
Kate Hudson’s athletic brand Fabletics, founded in 2013, launched a capsule collection on June 7 with dancer and actress Maddie Ziegler called The Maddie Ziegler <3 Fabletics capsule. “Maddie embodies our values and creatively expresses herself everyday through movement and dance,” Hudson said in a statement, while Ziegler added, “I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember, so having activewear that not only looks great but also moves with me is so important to feeling good, both on and offstage.” Pieces include sports bras, pocket shorts, muscle tanks, footwear and high-waisted leggings.
Miley Cyrus’ brand Happy Hippie is standing up for abortion rights by releasing a collab with Marc Jacobs on June 4, with all proceeds benefitting Planned Parenthood. The first charitable item from Jacobs’ new line The Marc Jacobs, the pink sweatshirt reads “Don’t F-ck with My Freedom” over a picture of Cyrus (whose episode of Black Mirror dropped on June 5) holding grapefruits over her breasts ($175).
Parley, a global network of creatives aiming to save the ocean, created Ocean Plastic bags in collaboration with acclaimed modern artists Ed Ruscha, Doug Aitken, Walton Ford, Jenny Holzer, Pipilotti Rist, Julian Schnabel and Rosemarie Trockel. The limited-edition totes, sold at MoMA and the Tate among other museums, are each made from five recycled plastic bottles. Purchases benefit global ocean clean-ups.
Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch brought the mean-girl style of Cheryl Blossom to her new collection with Privé Revaux, out in May. The M3 sunglasses come in three styles: the thin rectangular Matrix, the statement Monroe frames and the cat eye Mads ($39.95 per pair).
Kourtney Kardashian’s lifestyle site Poosh teamed with S’well to create a limited-edition Poosh x S’well baby blue water bottle ($20 of each bottle goes to marine conservation group Oceana). “Protecting our planet is more important now than ever. I want to do my part to make sure that our children have a beautiful world for years to come,” Kardashian said in a statement.
Vans debuted its Harry Potter collection on June 7, featuring a tie-dye hoodie with the Deathly Hallows symbol and sneakers repping the four Hogwarts houses. Those with a darker sense of style can sport a black backpack with the Death Eater motif; news junkies can don The Daily Prophet newsprint ComfyCush Era shoes.
