‘Perks of Being a Wallflower,’ ‘American Horror Story’ Win GLAAD Media Awards

The 24^th annual GLAAD Media Awards continued Saturday in Los Angeles, where Perks of Being a Wallflower took home outstanding film: wide release.

Former President Bill Clinton was honored with the advocate for change award, while NBC’s The New Normal took home outstanding comedy series. FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum won outstanding TV movie or mini-series, and NBC’s Days of Our Lives won outstanding daily drama.

During his acceptance speech, Clinton said he would continue working until all people who loved each other could get married. He called on the audience to “fight bullying” and said his daughter Chelsea, her husband, and their gay friends have modeled for him “the way we ought to treat each other regardless of sexual orientation.”

He continued: “We are less racist, less sexist, less homophobic, but we have a new problem: we don’t want to be around anyone who disagrees with us.”

Clinton’s daughter escorted him off the stage after his speech.

Charlize Theron and Leonardo DiCaprio introduced Steve Warren, an entertainment lawyer who was honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. He gave a fiery speech and took specific aim at Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, whom he called a schoolyard bully who uses his intellect instead of his fists.

The ceremony took place at the JW Marriott and was hosted by Drew Barrymore. Additional honorees were announced in New York last month, and more are to come May 11 in San Francisco.

The GLAAD Media Awards fund the organization’s work of bringing stories of LGBT people and issues to the U.S. public. The events have raised nearly $3.5 million for the group annually.
