The latest trailer for Possessor, Neon’s upcoming sci-fi horror and the first feature in eight years from Brandon Cronenberg, son of filmmaker David Cronenberg, has dropped.
Starring Christopher Abbott and Andrea Riseborough, the film follows corporate assassin Tasya Vos (Riseborough) who executes targets by taking over others’ bodies with the help of brain-implant technology. But all that time killing inside other people’s heads is wearing on her, despite her proclivity for the job, and she’s beginning to lose control. As she strains to manage the violent memories and urges, her latest assignment pushes her closer over the edge when Vos becomes trapped inside the body of Abbott’s Colin Tate, a mind that threatens to obliterate her.
The trailer details this mind-bending, action-packed gory journey, beginning with the lies Tasya tells her family about her work. After returning home to her son and husband, she describes her cover story trip as “extremely dull” before she’s given her next contract assignment by her boss, Girder (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The latest target is the CEO of the largest operation in the U.S., and Tasya is slated to slip into the mind of Colin to execute it.
But when she’s thrown into his mind, a job that can’t afford any mistakes suddenly becomes one riddled with them. Colin isn’t acting like himself, of course, and others in his life are noticing. But Tasya isn’t acting right either. When the time comes to pull the trigger on her target, she anxiously reveals she can’t.
That’s because Colin still has some control and he’s fighting within his own mind to get it all back from her. “I need to know — I need to know what she’s done to me,” Abbott’s character says as the war inside his head manifests in a mirror through rapid and eery changes in expression.
Soon after, that internal battle comes to a head in the real world, as Colin hunts down the person who tried to set him up for murder. “Sometimes one small thought is all it takes to lose control,” Leigh says over a montage of blood, injuries and gunfights.
Written by Cronenberg, Possessor, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival also features Tuppence Middleton and Sean Bean. The film is set to hit theaters on Oct. 9.
