On April 29, 2011, when Prince William and Kate Middleton married in front of 72 million people livestreaming from 188 countries and became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, they also became one of the most-watched couples in the world. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Beyonce and Jay-Z are arguably eclipsed by the young royals.
The record books show their royal wedding at Buckingham Palace was the most-watched event in world history. And who can forget Kate’s amazing Alexander McQueen gown, which catapulted Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton to the top ranks of fashion designers, and made Kate a new fashion icon–along with her sister, Pippa Middleton? Since one year ago, a day doesn’t go by without a report of what either of them is wearing or doing. And it certainly isn’t just the British who are watching.
Kate seems to have adjusted beautifully to her new royal and very public role–unlike William’s late mother Diana, who always seemed uncomfortable and shy on the world stage. Kate will wear expensive clothes by Burberry or inexpensive clothes by Reiss–both British labels–and she looks equally great in both. She keeps her fashion sense in perspective, and doesn’t let fashion overwhelm her, which she clearly could.

Also lovely is that William and Kate still have the big smiles and mutual warmth they had on their wedding day–it’s pretty evident in their pictures. A pretty picture, indeed.
